Chinese shipping companies jointly build! The world's first CNG transport ship sets sail
On the morning of March 23rd, under the supervision and maintenance of the maritime department, the world's first compressed natural gas (CNG) transport ship "JAYANTI BARUNA" was delivered and set sail in Qidong, Jiangsu. The ship will serve natural gas transportation between islands of peak shaving power plants in Indonesia, with a compressed natural gas volume of up to 700000 cubic meters transported per voyage.
The JAYANTI BARUNA is powered by natural gas and driven by a dual fuel main engine. It has a length of 110 meters and a designed speed of 14 knots. It is classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indonesian Bureau of Shipping. Compared to LNG liquefied natural gas transport ships, CNG transport ships store natural gas in pressure vessels on board at room temperature and high pressure, without the need for expensive facilities such as liquefaction devices and regasification terminals, resulting in significantly lower investment costs for CNG.
The ship underwent multiple rounds of optimization and improvement during the construction process, ultimately exploring breakthroughs in the overall layout, cargo system, fuel system, navigation performance, and many other challenges of CNG transport ships. As an important component of the natural gas industry chain, CNG transport ships provide a new optional solution for the transportation of natural gas, and the delivery of this ship also makes beneficial explorations for the future maritime transportation of hydrogen.
According to the International Shipbuilding Network, the "JAYANTI BARUNA" vessel was designed and manufactured by CIMC Shijiazhuang Anruike Gas Machinery Co., Ltd., CIMC Marine Engineering Design and Research Institute, Hantong Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, and CIMC Pacific Marine Engineering. The naming and delivery ceremony was held on March 6th this year. The cargo hold system of the ship is composed of hundreds of high-pressure gas cylinders designed and manufactured by CIMC Shijiazhuang Anruike using international standards, as well as a pressure regulating and highly integrated control system.
The ship is owned by Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), a state-owned power company in Indonesia, and operated by PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna (PBA), a shipping subsidiary of PLN. The project was initially launched in 2014 and consists of three major projects: a compressed gas storage device for the refueling mother station, a CNG transport vessel (with a capacity of 700000 cubic meters), and an onboard gas storage device and a gas storage and unloading device for the sub stations. Among them, the CNG transport ship was originally scheduled to be delivered and put into operation in May 2016, but due to the incomplete reception facilities in Indonesia, the new ship was delayed and finally delivered and put into operation in March of this year.
